Responsibility of an Artist

Just imagine going for an operation under skilled hands of a surgeon. Doctor knows his responsibility towards his patient. An Engineer knows his responsibility when she builds a bridge. They know when they have failed.

But what about Artist? Does she have a responsibility towards the viewer (or to the society in general). At present I think all Artist take this creative freedom for granted. (Perhaps I am also like that). But do remember that Artist has to do a lot of hard work to learn his craft. Her choosen field of creativity. Only after a lot of hours (perhaps the 10,000 hours rule) does that maturity evolves in her work.

But what happens when an Artist fails ? Nothing. artist goes scottfree.

Go to the other end....
You talk about taboo. and are in news. You create controversial art and get a lot of sound bytes. Is that Art?
Has she or he successfully born the responsibility of being an artist.

What is the responsibility of an artist ? Or you think there is None ?

How do you know that artist has fulfilled his responsibility with 100% or even 70%

Let me know in your comments.

Thanks

Breaking a taboo: Artist Talks about Art

Its a   tabooo. Right, "A painter communicates through his canvas. why does he need words".

So I was not sure when i  decided to talk about my work at one of my recent exhibitions. But I think it was important as it gave a launchpad for viewers to see the paintings through painters eyes.

This is the first time i was addressing a group and artists are not very extrovert. But I did it.
Thanks to my lovely daughter who found out the essence of my works in a poem by Atal Bihari Vajpayee. It summed up my works nicely.

The poem is titled "Suraj aur Os ki Boondh". and talks about the Lasting sun and the ever so temporary dew drop (os ki boondh).  I am not able to find it on Internet so I guess I will have to type it in or ask Preeti to do it for me. (hopefully soon).

Meanwhile, who thought this could lead to me giving a presentation altogether. to a distinguished Panel about Art. It was a fantabulous challenge and I enjoyed it to the hilt.
